Student vs. Working Student

As one reaches adulthood, they have many life choices to make including how they will pay for tuition and expenses while attending school. For those who have an option of working or not, it is better to focus on schoolwork rather than juggle class and work schedules. Both have their specific advantages, but it is better to go to school full time than to divide one’s time between work and school if at all possible.

Of course, not all working while in school is bad because there are benefits too. One benefit to working while in school is the student can afford to have play money when exams are over or there is free time. There is another advantage to working. On the working student’s resume, they will have something to write down and employers are looking for experience more than anything else. Another huge advantage for the working student is they do not need to take out a loan because they can pay their tuition with the money earned at their occupation. The average student in North Dakota for a two year degree pay over three thousand dollars, proof of this fact comes from “Tuition and fees at BSC average $3,773 compared to $2,737 nationally, according to a report by BSC to the state Senate Appropriations Committee in January.” . That may be a lot of money, but for the working student at least they do not need to take out a loan. “The average student graduates with about $21,000 in debt these days”< http://www.cnn.com/2008 /LIVING / personal/03/05/student.loans/index.html.> Then again the advantage of the full time student is they can pay off the loan with the job they get after earning their diploma even faster than the working.

Then again if a person decides to work and go to school at the same time there are many disadvantages. One disadvantage to the student is they may have to attend classes around their work schedule. This is problematic because the student might have to wait for certain classes to come around again if they missed out on the class the first time it was offered. Another disadvantage is the grade the student may receive could be affected because of lack of studying time “For example, an increase in study effort of one hour per day (an increase of approximately .67 of a standard deviation in our sample) is estimated to have the same effect on grades as a 5.74 point increase in ACT scores (an increase of 1.54 standard deviations in our sample and 1.21 standard deviations among all ACT test takers” <http://www.clevelandfed.org/research/conferences/ 2005/ November/Papers/ Stine bricknerPaperFINALweb>. If the student would have studied more then, they could have received a better grade. One more downside to working while still in school is school takes up a lot of time. So when one is either at work or studying for a test, there is not much time for anything else including a social life. Another downside to working is the people that chose to go for their degree ahead of working people will have the advantage of being out in the working world before the working students; therefore, they will get the jobs they want faster and start earning money faster at those higher paying jobs.

There are many more benefits to being a full time student while attending school than a working student. If one focuses on earning their degree then they will earn their degree faster than the working person because the working person has to go to classes around their work schedule. Freshman year is tough people just starting out sometimes need a little extra help. Being a full time student means having more time to devote to their studies and tutoring if needed. In a world of hectic people, if one is focused on earning their degree they may have less stress then the people constantly worrying about losing their jobs, and how they will pass their next test and when they will finally earn their diploma of choice. Yes, there won’t be as much money to spend on free time and they will need to apply for scholarships and loans, but being a full time student is still better because it is less stressful. Let us look at two pictures of two different students that made their choices.

So imagine a student working at a store and on the student’s free time instead of relaxing after someone chewed them out while on the floor. They are busily working on their homework and studying for their test. The test is scheduled for the next day when the boss comes in and says they need to work late. The student doesn’t have much choice because jobs are hard to come by right now. So they take their test and do poorly because they didn’t have enough time to study. In addition to their mind being worried about losing their job the working student is left with a failing grade, and layoffs are around the corner. Who would want to live this life?

Or better yet picture this…a student wakes up fully refreshed, enjoys a book. After that, looks online for scholarships they qualify for because their grades are high which was made possible by all the studying the student did. The student is relaxed because they have been studying for the past few weeks for the test. So they know the material and take the test. Finally the student receives an A and goes on to celebrate with a few friends they met in class.

School is so crucial towards a young person’s life the social aspect i.e.: the connections they make, the grades are so important to what they become in twenty years. Which picture would anyone like to live in because both people are found everywhere in school at the coffee shop, using the computers, and another playing guitar outside on the lawn. There are two pictures to choose from one struggling to find scholarships to pay for their expenses, and the other struggling to pay for school, work, study, and if there is time possibly find some time to have a social life.. The struggling for money student sounds a lot better than the stressed out working one.

In conclusion, there are only two choices to make for the student that has the option of not working for a living. Whether it is, to slave away for the man or at the books there are disadvantages to both sides. But the disadvantages on the full time student side are much less then the never ending to do list of the working student. The benefits of the full time student far outweigh the money struggles because it makes up for the issues. If a student had the choice of not working versus working and going to school the better choice is being a full time student.
