Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow

Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow

Concluding this class is a bit sad. During the course of English 98 I have grown as a person and a writer. In the beginning of this class I could not write effectively, or analytically, and now I can. I also improved on my ability to bring a paper through the writing process. Thank you for reading my best works and I hope it is apparent that Peace Love and Hope is all a person needs. I would also like to give a big thank you to my English 98 teacher and class. I would have never become the strong writer I am today without them.

The Real Me

Inventory of being

I am Krystal
I have aged for nineteen years though it feels like longer.

I am an old soul.

I should have been born during a time of love of nature in the mountains where electricity couldn't reach.

The outer shell of my being is wrong to me sometimes I look in the mirror and am surprised.

Sometimes I see a pretty girl with dirty blonde hair, pale complexion, high cheekbones, aqua marine eyes with a white smile but I feel like a child.

Where did the years go? I spent them in my room hiding from the world.

I am a girl desperately trying to become a woman, a Christian to the core, and a romantic all the time.

I love being in love and everything that entails.

I am the daughter of a strong woman that sometimes goes retro when a man is involved.

I like to open my heart and let loose the spirit inside, through song and dance.

I love God above all things. My other half falls under him, though we have not sealed our love with the forever kiss.

I hope to change the world through research and medicine.

I believe that the Lord and love is all one could ever need.

I know I am in love and I know the periodic table, of course.
I don’t understand how someone can want war and personal possessions.

My mother and sister I look up to because they are strong, and one day I hope to be. As a good Christian I try to lead a life like Jesus.

I hate war. The fact that people kill over pieces of paper kills me inside.

I could not bear to live a life without my Lord and savior.

I spend too much on people that don’t love me back.

If I had all the money in the world I'd help my mom, but I would still be me living by the river wearing a free flowing dress.

I wish there was no lies, that one could trust everybody.

I sometimes shake and get dizzy; I am an introvert working at being a social butterfly.

I plan to be a doctor of medical science and research how to help social disorders as I could not be helped when I was a child.

I am honest, but I trust no one. I love. I love so much I hate it.

My name is Krystal, and this is the real me.

Introduction to The Real Me

I chose to add this piece in my E portfolio because I had a lot of fun writing inventory of being. There are some spots where I don’t even remember writing so well, I am proud of this piece. I was totally open and honest with a bunch of strangers I have never met and that is not like me. Throughout this class I have grown and looking back on what I used to think was me, I am no longer “an introvert desperately trying to be an extrovert”. I am a good person that can finally talk to people without having social disorders get in the way. When I read, “I love God above all things. My other half falls under him, though we have not sealed our love with the forever kiss.” I remembered the pretty imagery that created in my mind. The way I represented the marital first kiss using word choice is poetry. I am proud of this piece because it’s the real me.

Theme: Start them Young

“Mortenson decided CAI schools should educate students only up to fifth grade and focus on increasing the enrollment of girls. Once you educate the boys they tend to leave the villages and go search for work in the cities. But the girls stay home, become leaders in the community, and pass on what they’ve learned. If you really want to change a culture, to empower women, improve basic hygiene and health care, and fight infant mortality, the answer is to educate the girls.” Pg 209

In this quote Mortenson was trying to come up with a solution to Pakistan’s healthcare problems because babies were dying. The women of the villages didn’t know how to properly care for their babies when it came to hygiene. Mortenson believes that if he can educate the people of Pakistan up to fifth grade everything will change. The boys won’t have to tend to the sheep and the girls will have the knowledge to keep their people alive and not die because of sanitary ignorance. Then the girls will teach other girls what they know. If the children are educated young at least they will have a fighting chance.

“Nobel Prize winner Amartya Sen’s idea that you can change a culture by giving its girls the tools to grow up educated so they can help themselves.” pg 234

Once again this is another quote expressing the need for children especially girls to be educated at a young age. It is Mortenson’s own experience that this is true. Mortenson has heard of a girl from Pakistan that went to school and afterward is accepted into college and has dreams of being a doctor. Educate them young and they will change the world.

“From the age of twelve, she said, she felt a calling to work with the poor, and began training for missionary work.” Pg 236

This is the perfect example of the young being educated and changing the world. Mother Teresa started her lifetime work at age twelve. Most little girls at this time are just learning their how to divide and in America these little girls are in 6th grade so they have a little over the same education Pakistan children that go to a CAI school. However, in Pakistan the average fifth grader is fifteen. At the age of twelve Mother Teresa feels this tugging on her heart and sets to work at a young age and she did change the world. When people think of a good person to the core, they contrast it to her. It is because Mother Teresa started out so young that she accomplished so much.

Hey I noticed that some people were on the same line as me. The theme for chapters 16 through 20 is obviously education is the answer. I thought it was particularly interesting that Mortenson thought once someone reaches fifth grade level. In America children aren’t allowed to be alone in the fifth grade, yet Mortenson believes people can stand on their own. America and Pakistan are so different it is scary to see the responsibilities that they in the small hands of children in Pakistan when ours are so protected. Does anyone else believe the same?

Introduction to Analyzing Three Cups of Tea

This is a snippet of my seminar work where I analyzed Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson. In this seminar the assignment was to pick a few quotes that fit a theme that resonates throughout the book. The theme I saw and pointed out that most of my group saw was Education is the answer and to educate children young, so they can impact the world. Some places where my ability to analyze shown through particularly was in my first quote I realized what Mortenson meant by “schools should educate students only up to fifth grade and focus on increasing the enrollment of girls.” (Mortenson pg 209) Because I analyzed his words and got out the theme “educate them young”.
